Have You Been Feeling Anxious Lately? Here’s What You Need to Know

Have you been thinking a lot about the spreading virus? Is it the first thought when you wake up and the last when you sleep? Well, you are not alone. Research shows that COVID-19 has taken a heavy toll on the mental health of people who are not even directly impacted by the disease. 

Like our physical health, mental health holds the capacity to shape our thoughts, feelings, actions and can ever determine how our day will be. And each one of us has quirks like- fidgeting, binge-watching, gorging on food, inability to sleep till late hours among others when we are anxious. While some of it may be nervous reactions before a meeting, exam or some other important event of the day, but if you feel any of the below mentioned signs repeatedly, it’s always better to seek professional help from a psychiatrist or a psychologist: 

  • Feeling anxious or worrying most of the time
  • Rapid fluctuations in mood
  • Feeling sad or hopeless throughout the day
  • Can not stop thinking about any upsetting events of the past
  • Frequent irritation and angry outbursts
  • Facing extreme fears that interfere with your daily activities
  • Consuming alcohol or other drugs in excess to cope with your anxiety

Am I the only one experiencing it? 
No. There has been a rise in the cases of anxiety and other mental wellness issues, especially after the lockdown that limited one’s social interactions. The inability to cope up with work hours, study schedules while juggling everyday tasks has increased the number of anxiety and depression cases. Whereas, with proper doctor consultation and timely therapy, mental health can be restored. Here are a few mental illnesses that need timely attention: 

Anxiety: 
Worrying or feeling nervous in difficult and sad situations is experienced by everyone. But if it interferes with your day-to-day activities, relationships, causing dizziness, racing heart as well as experiencing other physical symptoms, it points towards a severe form of anxiety and needs proper treatment. 

Depression:
It is one of the most common under-treated forms of mental illness. In most cases, the signs of depression such as- feeling sad, irritated, overwhelmed or hopeless are confused with everyday stress. If experiencing these signs, it’s time to take control of life and not let it meddle with daily activities. It’s important that you consult a psychologist or psychiatrist for proper treatment. 

Bipolar Disorder: 
This causes rapid, unpredictable mood swings with a complete shift from feeling elated and happy to feeling low and depressed. In most cases, because of complex diagnosis, a lot of people keep on experiencing the symptoms without timely treatment. Whereas, with appropriate diagnosis and timely treatment one can live the life to fullest without regular episodes. 

Borderline Personality Disorder: 
When experiencing extreme sadness or anger, our coping mechanisms help in dealing with it. Whereas, people with borderline personality disorder experience intense emotions which make them eat frantically, go numb, drive recklessly, or even harm themselves in certain situations. But proper treatment, medication and support from friends and family makes it easier to regain emotional control.
