Here’s how to live well with Cognitive Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder

Long gone are the days when just the diagnosis of a particular disease seemed like the end of the world. With advanced medical facilities, most diseases are now treatable and easily manageable. COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is one such condition that can not only be managed but also prevented. Let’s know more about the condition and ways to “live well” with COPD.

As the name suggests, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a set of lung diseases or respiratory conditions that include asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis. People suffering from COPD often complain of wheezing, shortness of breath, lack of energy, chest tightness, tiredness, swollen ankles, unexplained weight loss, cough with phlegm and frequent respiratory infections, among other things. While there are several medical treatments for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, frequent flare-ups can also be managed by a number of home remedies in addition to the prescribed treatment. Here’s how:
Stay smoke-free as much as possible
Outdoor smoke and smoking in every form are the characteristic risk factor in COPD. Therefore, one of the primary prerequisites of managing COPD is to stay away from smoking whether partial, direct or environmental. Since pollutants and irritants worsen the condition, staying away from such triggers can help treat COPD symptoms more easily. It is also recommended that you avoid E-cigarettes as well. People who are not active smokers should try to restrict overexposure to pollution and avoid visiting areas that are proven to be polluted. Any form of smoke is a massive threat to the lungs, therefore, watch out for indoor fireplaces too as it may aggravate COPD symptoms.

Improve your quality of life with breathing techniques
Patients with COPD frequently struggle with shortness of breath that makes carrying out day-to-day activities increasingly difficult. It is, therefore, essential to learn certain breathing techniques that may help in strategic inhalation and exhalation.  Asthma patients can also learn from specific deep breathing techniques and give diaphragmatic breathing or pursed-lip breathing a try. By employing a combination of these techniques, one can effectively optimize breathing despite the prevailing lung issues. Consider finding a respiratory therapist to assist you with the possible breathing techniques.

Watch what you eat!
You’d know that a mildly favoured and well-balanced meal can help one stay healthy and even improve certain COPD symptoms. However, some food items may also be triggers that can worsen the condition. Therefore, while incorporating a healthy mix of fruits and vegetables can help one draw essential nourishment, dairy products may aid phlegm production and clog the respiratory tracts. Consuming nutritious items like chia seeds, flax seeds, omega 3 fatty acids, citrus fruits, etc. as part of the diet is recommended to get the necessary vitamins, minerals and fibers. Additionally, several studies point toward avoiding artificial sugars, preservatives, processed foods and packaged foods.

Brace yourself up for winters
People with COPD would know that windy days and colder seasons along with air pollution are known to drastically affect the condition. As the temperature drops and COPD patients are exposed to prolonged people of cold, the respiratory system too may flare-up and aggravate the symptoms. Therefore, it is best that people with the ongoing condition adopt certain precautionary measures to live well. A good way to cope with pollution and the windy breeze is to wear a mask at all times when stepping out. In addition to preventing the COVID, masks also help one stay safe from infections like cough, cold, flu, etc. Additionally, remember to sip up enough warm water throughout the day. Avoid being in close proximity with dusty areas and keep your living spaces free of dust, pet dander and other external triggers.

Keep your doctors in the loop
In addition to the aforementioned steps, ensure you consult your doctor before trying any new activity or supplement. In case of any abnormality, get in touch with your regular medical practitioner.
