Licensed to Feed: The essentials of breastfeeding
It's always been suggested that mother's milk is the best milk, and hence the mothers are advised to breastfeed their babies. Breastfeeding means the process of feeding the mother milk to a baby. However, a lot of people still don't have adequate knowledge of the importance of breastfeeding, and hence need to be acquainted with the topic.
Breastfeeding advantages for the baby
Breastfeeding a baby directly improves the health conditions of a baby including both mental and physical development. A few of the breastfeeding advantages for baby are:
Breast Milk is the perfect nourishment for babies:
Breast milk contains everything that the baby needs in the first 6 months of life in the right proportions. Its composition changes according to the changing needs of the baby, especially in the first few months. This is the first milk a mother produces after giving birth. It is rich in protein, low in sugar and loaded with beneficial compounds.
Colostrum is nutritionally superior to formula milk:
A mother's first milk is liquid gold. Because of its deep yellow colour, Colostrum is called liquid gold. It is the first thick milk secreted during pregnancy and immediately after delivery. Colostrum helps the immature digestive tract of the newborn and is fulfilling for the baby so that even a small amount of milk can satisfy the baby's hunger. Colostrum becomes mature milk between the third and fifth day after birth. This mature milk contains the right amount of fat, sugar, water and protein to allow the baby's growth. The energy in breast milk is more effective than the energy in formula milk.
Breast milk contains necessary antibodies:
-Breast milk is highly rich in antibodies, which can help the baby fight bacteria and viruses, which is very important in the first few months of life. This is especially true of colostrum, which is the first milk being provided to the baby. If there are histories of allergies in the family, breastfeeding might be advantageous because milk contains various antibodies and nutrients that can protect the baby for a lifetime.
-Because babies digest milk easily, they are unlikely to experience digestive problems, diarrhoea and stomach upset. In addition, the baby will not have the problem of constipation.
Breastfeeding may reduce the risk of illness:
Breastfeeding babies are protected for life. Diseases such as diabetes, type 1 and type 2 can be kept at bay. It can also reduce the risk of obesity in later life. The incidence of lymphoma and leukaemia is shown to be declining in breastfed infants. In cases where the babies are born prematurely, breastfeeding can aid in improving the overall health and growth of the baby.
Breast milk helps maintain a healthy baby weight:
Breastfeeding can prevent the chances of childhood obesity and can promote healthy weight and height gain. Breastfed babies have more Leptin than those who are fed infant formula. Leptin is a vital hormone that regulates appetite and milk storage. The baby will consume till they' are full, which is beneficial for good eating habits. For premature babies, breast milk increases their well-being.
Even a lactating mother has several health benefits of breastfeeding, both physically and emotionally. Studies show that breastfeeding could help the mother deal with the pain after a C-section and it can reduce the chances of post-partum depression (PPD) as well. It also reduces the risks of several types of diseases like breast cancer, endometriosis, diabetes, ovarian cancer, etc. at later stages of life.
Considering all the benefits of breastfeeding for baby and mom, even medical experts have recommended breastfeeding exclusively for 6 months. During these months, mothers are advised not to feed the baby with any other form of liquid food but only breast milk.
