Some Common Reasons behind Acid Reflux & Tips to Manage It Well

Acid reflux is quite a common condition that emphasises a burning pain in the lower chest area of a human body. Most commonly it is known as heartburn when the acids from the stomach try to flow back inside the food pipe. Acid reflux is diagnosed as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when there is reflux happening more than two times a week.

GERD is common among obese, pregnant women and the elderly. This could be a major cause of severe health complications.

Now let's understand the reasons behind acid reflux

One of the common reasons for acid reflux is hiatal hernia, which is a stomach abnormality. This is caused when the upper part of your stomach moves above the diaphragm. The muscle that separates your stomach from your chest is known as a diaphragm. Under such a condition, stomach acid could move upwards into your chest, causing reflux.

Some other conditions causing reflux are:

  • Lying down just after a meal
  • Obesity
  • Bedtime snacking
  • Spicy food or fatty food, including citrus, tomato, garlic, mint, chocolate and onion, can also lead to acid reflux.
  • Pregnancy
  • Too much consumption of coffee, tea, alcohol and carbonated drinks
  • Medications for blood pressure, muscle relaxers and frequent consumption of aspirin or ibuprofen

Common acid reflux disease symptoms

A regular symptom of acid reflux is heartburn, which can either mean a single episode of chest burn or a persistent condition of GERD. It is an uncomfortable sensation of burning in the oesophagus. It is at the back of the breastbone area where people generally feel the burn. The condition can last for many hours, making you feel uncomfortable.

Some of the other acid reflux symptoms include:

  • Dry and persistent coughing
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Pain upper abdominal or in the chest
  • Bad breath
  • Dental erosion
  • Throat-related problems like hoarseness, soreness and laryngitis

How to manage acid reflux well?

Do not panic! Just as common as this disease might sound, there are several ways by which people can manage their condition, even if it is acute. Let's try some of the changes in your lifestyle and remedies that you can work upon before you visit any hospital for medications.

Try some of the following changes and transformations, which will cure most of the issues that cause acid reflux in the first place.

  • Quit Smoking

When you quit smoking, it normalises the pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which in turn reduces the likelihood of acid reflux.

  • Acid reflux food to avoid

As mentioned in the causes section, try to avoid the mentioned ingredients in your beverage and meal, and you will instantly feel the difference.

  • Early to Eat!

When a person eats at least 3 hours before sleeping, they give their body some time to properly digest their food, which reduces the likelihood of acid reflux.

Other than that, one must also work on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a moderate weight. Acid reflux is reduced when you maintain a balance between your work life and health while focusing on eating habits, time, and mental peace. Well, that truly is the secret to a healthy life and definitely reduces the condition of acid reflux in your body. So happy eating people!
